Program Outline

Two-Day In-Person Course

The Leadership Capstone program is recommended for hospitalists with three or more years of experience, who are already leading or preparing to lead an academic, business, or clinical change initiative at their institution. The course incorporates new didactic content and facilitated workshops.

Participants will have the opportunity to practice skills through role-playing, improve their personal and professional plans and will leave the two-day course with an assigned learning pod, a group of peers plus a coach to continue learning for six months following the program.

Professional Executive Coaching

Capstone course participants will also have opportunity to work with several experienced physician/provider leaders that are also trained coaches in the new addition of Professional Executive Coaching. This is a wonderful way to develop yourself professionally and personally. The skilled leaders have worked in the coaching space to create an environment where the people they coach are able to explore new ideas, build confidence, and consider the possibility of more. Their coaching training combined with their lived experience in clinical capacities enables them to create an authentic space for you to find your own solutions and opportunities to whatever you’re facing as a healthcare provider.

They are all trained in accordance with the professional, confidential, and ethical standards of the International Coaching Federation (ICF) with the additional benefit of a clinical mindset. The goal of each coaching session is to help partner with you to unlock previously untapped sources of imagination, productivity, and leadership, all while navigating the challenges constantly present in the healthcare space.

This coaching experience will start with a 60-minute, one-on-one session on-site during the Capstone Course, and will continue with 3 one-hour pro-bono sessions over Zoom the six months following the Academy. We hope you will take advantage of this one-of-a-kind opportunity to enhance your leadership experience!

Certificate of Leadership in Hospital Medicine

The Certificate of Leadership in Hospital Medicine (CLHM) cultivates leadership skills in the context of specific hospital medicine challenges. Participants develop a professional portfolio that showcases their ability to plan, execute, and evaluate initiatives that strengthen hospital medicine programs. This designation informs employers, or potential employers, with confidence that a candidate is equipped and ready to lead teams and grow the organization.

To become eligible for the optional CLHM designation, Leadership Capstone participants must:

  • Attend the on-site kick-off plus at least four of six pod calls during the Capstone program.
  • Complete at least two additional SHM Leadership Academy courses.
  • Submit a structured final report, to be approved by the course director.
